When someone is involved in a car accident, it is normal to feel overwhelmed. It is essential, however, to make a strong attempt to stay calm to ensure the safety of all passengers. The next step is to call the Police and notify if anyone has been injured. It is also beneficial to obtain the insurance information of the other car involved in the event that there may be a bodily injury claim.
After receiving emergency care and a doctor rules out any possible internal injuries, it is recommended to attend a facility specialized in accident related injuries. Receiving treatment from a qualified professional will guarantee proper care, and this evaluation will be vital during the claims process. These doctors fill out forms that fall outside of the routine documentation of ER and Family Doctors.
After an accident, Emergency Rooms (ERs) and Urgent Care facilities will provide pain medication but they will not offer long term care or therapy unless the patient is in a life and death state. When patients are brought to a hospital following an accident, the normal protocol is to refer them to car accident facilities to receive specilized care.
Common injuries resulting from an accident are: whiplash, brain trauma, and soft tissue injuries. There are also other serious injuries to the spine and neck that take weeks to present any symptoms; however, patients only have 14 days to visit a doctor after the accident to be able to open a claim. It is for this reason that it is recommended to visit a specialized doctor early on in the process as a preventative measure.
After opening a claim with your accident attorneys, you may also be asked to submit medical records, updates, injury reports, and any information that pertaining to the insurance company provided at medical and therapy facilities. Most importantly, it is not recommended to communicate with insurance companies if they the individual is being legally represented, or answer any misleading questions from anyone calling.
