It is important to know which cars are prone to having accidents. When you are ready to buy a car, whether new or used, you must consider a few factors: model, color, engine, etc. But have you ever considered which cars have more accidents in their records?
Some companies, such as the Insurance Institute for Highway, have studied this matter with the help of insurance companies. They analyzed all the accidents in the United States and published a list of which cars have more accidents on highways: Volkswagen CC 4WD and 2WD, Ford Fusion, Hyundai Sonata, Volkswagen Jetta, Kia Optima, Nissan Maxima, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and Subaru Impreza.
Studies indicate that compact and light cars have more disadvantages during accidents since their bodies are smaller and have less room to react in the event of a crash.
The center of gravity on SUV’s, vans and pick up trucks is higher off the ground and their base is narrower, making them prone to overturn. Sports cars are also prone to overturn, but not because of the car itself. Often, drivers of sports cars tend to drive in a more reckless manner.
Another studied aspect was the color of the car. According to a report from the University of Auckland in New Zeland, brown, black and green cars are more commonly seen in accidents, whereas gray, red and yellow cars see less accidents.
The study indicated that dark vehicles camouflage with their environment and reflect less light, making it difficult for other drivers to see, especially at night. Black cars are 20 % more prone to be involved in an accident during rainy days or during other low visibility instances.
Gray cars, however, do not typically mix with the environment. When choosing a color for your car, gray may be safer based on study findings.
Even with all the findings of studies, statistics and evidence, this knowledge can only go so far. What ultimately keeps one from having a car crash is the prudence and responsibility of the one behind the wheel.
